I am excited to team up again with Sam Hester to offer this workshop! We will each bring our unique styles and ways of working. We can’t wait to share what we have learned over our 20 years of combined experience, get the tools in your hands, and grow the Graphic Recording scene in Alberta!

For the past 12 years, Sam Hester, of The 23rd Story, has worked as a graphic recorder in Calgary/Moh’kinsstsis, creating visual stories that draw upon deep listening skills, a passion for community-building…that’s a lot of markers.

When she’s not taking notes at live events, Sam does independent comics journalism and advocates for the graphic medicine movement.

Sam attended the Universities of Calgary and Toronto, as well as OCAD University, way back when it was still the Ontario College of Art and Design.

Participant Highlights…

Read what past participants had to say about their experience with our workshop!

“I already have plans to apply my graphic recording skills in an organizational capacity, offering it as an extra tool for training!”

“I came into the workshop with not a ton of expectations, rather just ready to absorb all the information that I could. I found the workshop exceeded any expectations I did have, though! I appreciated how interactive the workshop was (I thought I maybe would be spending more time at a table, learning, but the majority of it was hands on which I really appreciated).

I gained knowledge on how to listen to the key parts of conversation. I learnt a lot about how to represent abstract words visually (things like change, or pivot). I gained a lot of knowledge in terms of how to organize all of my ideas onto one page, and how to go with the flow (as things often change on the fly and you have to be adaptable to that!)

I already have plans to apply my graphic recording skills in an organizational capacity, offering it as an extra tool for training, when things could benefit from being represented visually, and for supporting conversations. (side note: I am even implementing it and trying it out for the first time this week- yay!)

I would absolutely recommend this workshop. You don’t need to have any artistic ability to be good at graphic facilitation, which is I think a barrier a lot of people may see. It’s an amazing creative process, and I had such an amazing time, and learnt so much!

Highlights: The fact that there was a graphic recording being made during this workshop! I thought that was amazing.

Thank you again so much for all of your hard work that you put into this workshop! I can see the love you poured into it and I truly had an amazing time.”
